Supporting Vulnerable Single Mothers & their Children in Ethiopia.

Meseret for Women empowers single mothers to recover from the trauma of abandonment, sexual assault and birth. This allows them time to bond with their baby, learn, develop key skills, and build a future for themselves.

ADDIS ABABA STATISTICS

375,000+

In Addis Ababa alone, an estimated 375,000+ women face abandonment, sexual assault, and societal stigma due to single motherhood.

30%

of children in Addis Ababa are born to mothers who must raise them without support, often under extreme poverty and hardship.

35%

of women experience some form of sexual violence. This is likely higher for single mothers, who may face abandonment and other societal pressures.

Our Mission

Is to provide a safe haven and comprehensive support for single mothers in Addis Ababa. We aim to break the cycle of poverty by empowering these mothers through rehabilitation, skills training, access to meaningful employment, and providing quality childcare for their children.

We have witnessed the extreme challenges faced by single mothers who were forced to leave their homes due to shame and stigma and live rough on the streets of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Meseret for Women runs a refuge in Addis where these mothers and babies are safe and given a chance to break free from the vicious cycle of poverty.

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

On the Ground

Nestled at the base of the Entoto Mountains, Addis Ababa is not just the bustling capital of Ethiopia but also a vital cultural and economic hub for the country. Known as the “Political Capital of Africa” due to the presence of the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, it serves as a melting pot of cultures and traditions.

Addis Ababa is home to more than 5 million people and continues to grow rapidly. This expansion, however, brings challenges for many, particularly single mothers who are often left vulnerable in a city where the cost of living rises while opportunities for marginalized women remain scarce. Despite the city’s international significance, many women face issues like abandonment and limited access to education and healthcare, making it harder for them to create stable lives for themselves and their children.

Through Meseret for Women’s work, we focus on uplifting these women—providing not just relief but also the tools and education they need to secure their futures. Our programs empower them to overcome the immense challenges they face, enabling them to heal and build sustainable livelihoods in a city that is as dynamic as it is challenging.

By donating, you are creating a profound impact that will transform the lives of future generations in Ethiopia.
